Believe it or not, sugar is actually good for you, maybe not in the candy and doughnuts kind of way, but when it comes to skincare, it’s beneficial. That’s why it is the main ingredients in our Sugar Scrubs, and probably the most important.
The first reason being that sugar is a natural humectant, so it draws in and retains moisture, ensuring the skin is kept hydrated all day, making it ideal for all skin types, even sensitive. Natural humectants, like sugar, not only help attract water to the surface of the skin, but also deliver hydration and nutrients to the deeper layers, as well. This helps skin to keep consistently hydrated. I want to put an emphasis on natural humectants, because many skincare manufactures use synthetic humectants. Synthetic humectants pull water from the deeper levels of skin without replenishing it. This helps the surface of your skin to appear more hydrated for a little while, but as it evaporates, you’re left with less hydration overall, leading to dryness, dullness, and accelerated aging and can actually damage the skin over time. When skincare products are made with natural humectants, you can see and feel the difference all day.
Sugar is also known to be a natural source of Glycolic Acid, also known as an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid), which helps to gently exfoliate the top layer of the skin, getting rid of any dry, dead or flakey skin and impurities. Since sugar has such a small grain, it is just enough to exfoliate the skin and unclog pores, while being gentle enough to not scratch or irritate the skin. And because of the small size, it melts away after contact with water, so you are a lot less likely to over exfoliate. This is important, because over exfoliation can lead to raw and damaged skin, which is not something that anyone wants.
With all that being said, we encourage everyone to always do their own research when searching for a new skincare product. What works for one person may not always work for the next. Although we have carefully formulated our Sugar Scrubs with all skin types and conditions in mind, it is still up to the consumer to make sure this is the right product for use.
